so, where is the problem?

you are both saying that you understand italian better,
which makes a lot of sense because of all the languages italian
should be a lot closer to latin.

the two comparisons are unrelated:

1. it-fr  < sp-fr
2. it-sp  < sp-fr

as a graph:

   fr -------- sp
     \        /
      \      /
       \    /
         it

there is no contradiction.
both can be true.
