I recommend a more recent 2.4.x kernel.  2.4.20 is the latest
stable kernel.  Early 2.4.x kernels were where most of the problems
occurred.  2.4 is now pretty stable, although I bet that even
today, the current 2.2 kernel is more stable than anything in the
2.4 tree.

Stay away from 2.5 unless you enjoy borkage :-)
