Ironic that's in the NYT, since they require registration to use
their site.  The userid and password are free (beer), but they won't
allow you to read their site without selling some of your privacy
for information.  I have a policy of not reading the sites of 
newspappers that do this.  NYT id/password generators pop up from
time to time (check /.) but I just don't bother.

Of course it's their information and they can offer it on whatever
terms they like (terms which quite a few people refuse), but
I would be much more undertanding of that policy if they were
charging money for access to their online archives.  Since they
aren't, I think they should at least change their registration policy
to one which asks for no PII of any kind.
