I checked out the 5000, very nice but not as comfortable in the hand as my 950.  The 5700 has a redesigned grip and is a bit larger.  It's quite a bit nicer than the 5000.  If I were a 5000 owner, I would have felt robbed when the 5700 came out less than a year later.  It's that much better.

This can help, but it doesn't get around the basic weakness of the flash.  I could spit almost as far as its effective range.  Seriously, with a Coolpix 950, you want to be *close* to your subject when shooting flash.  < 2 meters is best.
