I finally got it to work, from quite a knowledgeable source.
You have to give the command "M-x set-terminal-coding-system <RET> euc-jp", and
the characters will display properly.
This is running emacs, with leim, on the kon console, after setting "M-x
set-input-method <RET> japanese".
Could I put in a request to have this info added to Mike Fabian's "CJK Support
in (Suse) Linux" document?
Specifically, this page:
http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/emacs-non-xim-input-methods.html
Hopefully this isn't inappropriate to ask because it didn't seem so obvious a
setting. I think I did stumble upon the setting myself even, at one point, but
even if I knew the syntax, probably tried JIS instead based on what I can see
under kon for that Hello file.
If it works, you can put in .emacs as:
(set-terminal-coding-system 'euc-jp)
For what it's worth, besides euc-jp, other possibilities might be iso-2022-jp,
shift_jis, or utf-8 instead of "euc-jp".
Anyways thanks for the ideas.
