I am running a redhat server, not a Desktop like you.
I used gcc 2.96 to upgrade kerel 2.2 to 2.4
[vuhung@example.com vuhung]$ gcc --version
2.96
[vuhung@example.com vuhung]$ uname -a
Linux xxx.co.jp 2.4.18-5 #1 Mon Jun 10 15:38:12 EDT 2002 i686 unknown
[vuhung@example.com vuhung]$
In fact, I got no problems when upgrading kernel.
redhat's gcc 2.96 has a bad reputation but I just got a litle problems
with that so far ...
