You could use a GUI frontend to do that too, just like you do with PuTTY
or TeraTerm in Windows, although you would have to use the CLI on the
remote machine.

Even that can be overridden by using X Forwarding and running GUI admin
tools remotely (oh the horror). There is no hope.
