[tlug] Which is faster fgrep or cat | grep

On a very large (200MB) file is there a speed difference between doing 
either

a) cat file | grep term

vs.

b) fgrep term file


I sometimes get the feeling that doing a cat | grep is faster than fgrep ... 
but I would have thought it should be faster

Are there any faster ways of finding something in a large text file?
