Check that support for the device that has the root fs is compiled in. For an IDE disk, say Y to "ATA/IDE/MFM/RLL support" and everything necessary under that tree. If you dont know which chipset your motherboard has, "Generic PCI IDE chipset support" should be enough. For SCSI, do the same and select the right devices. Check 'dmesg' and 'lspci' to find out what you need about your hardware. Modules are a good thing, but you have to compile in things that are needed to boot your system.
