That's what partitions are for. I think it's a lot easier than using tar, if
you have to reinstall quite often.

Could you please cut&paste the command you use with tar. Crashes usually mean
"segmentation fault", that's what you're getting ?

mc has some handy shortcuts. Press F2 and you get a list, there you should be
able to select "make a release of the current dir" (it depends on your
distribution though).
