I haven't played with Vine Linux, but I believe it's an offshoot of RH,
right?

See if there's a file in the home directory (of whatever user or all users)
called .Xclients  or .Xclients-default.  (Which might have been created if
you used the switchdesk command)
chmod 500 .Xclients

See if that works.  Not sure if your problem is quite identical to one that
I had, but it sounds similar and that's how I fixed it.
