post the output of 'cat `which startx`'

`startx -- :1' works fine in `sid', which is _not_ the way the world
is supposed to work....  :-)

You could also try debugging this by making a copy of startx and
putting "echo " in front of all the executable statements.  The old
ways are the best ways....
