Hi, I use Sun 1.3 on RH6.2 so I'm not really sure of the answer to your question but some things to try... If all you did to bash was to change the LANG, then try changing it back to whatever it was before launching java to see if it works. perhaps try... $ LANG=en_US /usr/java/j2sdk1.3.0/bin/java -version For Sun java bin/java is a Bourne shell script so you might try running it with -x so you can see what is going on... ie. $ bash -x /usr/java/j2sdk1.3.0/bin/java Just some ideas to get you started.
