Folks, I finally found the problem with XF86-4 and kinput2. I'd modified my copy of the CVS tree a couple of years ago to debug xim stuff ... and broke it. CVS helpfully merged in the delta between my tree and the main repository, never breaking the compile, and so I never noticed. Oops. -- Chris
