redhat installs two compilers, the kernel one is "kgcc" and the "gcc" is
the normal one.  I did find at least one program that wouldn't build with
"gcc", but would be with "kgcc".  and it wasn't the kernel... hrm.

But, now you can rebuild both of your compilers yourself and have the
satisfaction of doing that :)
