Yudit supports kinput2 with Canna and ATOK - 
your Japanized system may have the latter. 
If you can get kinput2 plus one of the above 
two running on your system (you can test 
them in a kterm window, etc.) then you can 
use them in Yudit. 

Yudit uses X's fonts to display whatever 
you want, so it should display Japanese 
or German out of the box on your 
Japanese-localized or German-localized 
system, should that be your choice. It 
can also use unicode fonts and Cyberbit 
fonts, which work quite well for multilingual 
tasks such as the one you are attempting. 
Cyberbit fonts used to be freely available on 
the Net but seems to have been retracted 
a couple of years back. You may still be 
able to find these fonts if you look 
around though. 

I think the best thing for you to do is 
set yourself with two or three options 
(Xemacs or emacs, vim/jvim and yudit, for 
example). This will let you find the setup 
that best fits your needs, and allow you to 
use the applications to compliment each other, 
as some are better at certain tasks but not 
at others. Yudit is very flexible and straight-
forward, but was not meant to be a high-rolling 
word processor. Emacs does the 10,000 things 
that it does very well, indeed. 

I don't believe in a one-in-all application, 
though it seems that many designers are trying 
to make such a product (he said, writing this 
note in pico, replying to a Japanese email with 
Yudit and getting back to a manuscript in jvim - 
if I need to do a complicated search and replace 
before finishing the latter, I will use emacs).
