Sure, it's great.  If it didn't exist, you wouldn't be trying to make money from
it.  Not that there's anything wrong with that, per #2.

You don't get it.

You're hacking on existing source.  Therefore, you're modifying someone else's
IP.  It's generally considered good form to offer the enhancements back to
the maintainer, no matter if you expect it to be integrated into the source.

If the above paragraph still doesn't parse, then there's nothing more I can say.

Ah.  So you're not speaking about Linux in particular, as you'd run into the
same problems if you were trying to use any of the BSDs.
