I edited the suggested line in sendmail.cf:

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DS10.20.30.40

where 10.20.30.40 is IP address of SMTP, restarted sendmail, sent a
message from vm. This is what appeared in /var/log/maillog:

Sep 29 11:33:06 localhost sendmail[7293]: LAA07293:
from=vp@example.com, size=325, class=0, pri=30325, nrcpts=1,
msgid=<14803.65378.75878.464124@example.com>,
relay=vik@example.com
Sep 29 11:33:06 localhost sendmail[7293]: LAA07293:
to=vp@example.com, delay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, stat=queued

And the mail stays in /var/spool/mqueue...
