RE: Backup on Linux [DVD?]




Well - perhaps technology and tapes have improved since then.  I was using a
connor 8GB SCSI DAT drive purchased in 1992.  Had problems with tapes
written 6m previous.  It could also have been a drive issue.  Found that I
needed to clean the drive after each backup.  This kind of experience makes
me nervous.

Though DLT is probably what I need longer term, am looking for an interum
media.  Thinking DVD with some automation at the moment.

We use DAT for backups here, I use one at home, and we also have one
on the TLUG server, and tape failures have proven uncommon.  We've
only had one go bad on the TLUG server in a year and a half, and
experience on other drives has been similar.

What kind of tape life did you experience?
