tlug: Re: Xconfig problems

Thanks for the instructions on how to get rid of xdm, Steve. Unfortunately I am
still having difficulties with configuring X. The following is what I could find
out about my hardware:

Computer: Fujitsu FMV-590DE
Monitor/Display: Fujitsu FMV-DP842
Display Adaptor: Fujitsu Power 9100(FMV-560DE,590DE,590T)

sound card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 or AWE-32
mouse port:
type of mouse: standard PS/2 port mouse (IRQ12)
type of graphics card: VGA/SVGA
horizontal sync: 31-57
vertical sync: 56-73
resolution: 1280 x 1024 bit 1677 $BK|?'(B

CD-ROM: MATSHITA CD-ROM CR-562
keyboard: 106 $BF|K\8l(B (A01) $B%-!<%\!<%I(B(Ctrl+$B1Q(B?)

Result of XFree86 SuperProbe (glibc20):
	First video: Super-VGA
	Chipset: Tseng ET4000 (Port Probed)
	Memory: 256 Kbytes
RAMDAC: Generic 8-bit pseudo-color DAC (with 6-bit wide lookup tables (or in 6-
bit mode))

Several previous attempts have failed, so this time I tried to work my way up
from the bottom. Since I don(IU(Bt know where the problem is I will list every
choice I made:

mouse protocol type? 4. PS/2 Mouse
enable Emulate3Buttons? y
Mouse device? /dev/mouse # took the default not knowing better ...
Keymap? 1 Standard 101-key, US encoding # would prefer Japanese, but could
not find ...
horizontal sync range?	1 31.5; Standard VGA, 640x480 @ 60 Hz
vertical sync range?	1 50-70
monitor identifier, vendor name, model name?	(defaults)
look at the card database? n # didn't find anything there at last attempt(II(B
default screen type?	vga16
modify the /etc/X11/Xserver file?	y
video memory?	1 256K
identifier for your video card definition?	(default)
vendor name?	Tseng
model (board) name?	ET4000
Clockchip setting?	n
run 'X -probeonly' now? n # led to problems in previous attempts
write it to the default location, /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config?	y

The result were vertical black and white stripes. I could get out of the x
though with ctrl-alt-backspace.

Then I tried the same as before except for:
horizontal sync range?	2 31.5 - 35.1; Super VGA, 800x600 @ 56 Hz
default screen type?	svga

For each depth, a list of modes (resolutions) is defined. The default
resolution that the server will start-up with will be the first listed
mode that can be supported by the monitor and card.
Currently it is set to:

"640x400" for 8bpp
"640x480" for 16bpp
"640x480" for 24bpp
"640x480" for 32bpp

5 The modes are OK, continue.

This led to monochrome blinking garbage on the screen and no way to get out of
it with ctrl-alt-backspace, I did not know better than to press the reset button
This was also the result of several previous attempts, so I thought I better ask
for help.

I don't know whether this is relevant, but when I got the machine it had Windows
installed and the color display was working fine. When I installed debian no
colors showed up even after choosing color display during the basic install.

After several difficulties with cdrom and color display under debian I thought I
might have damaged the hardware when I carried the computer from one table to
another, so I installed Windows again on one partition to test this assumption.

Booting Windows first gave a this colored picture of Windows at startup, then it
switched to monochrome for good. This could be fixed with installing some kind
of driver, but I don't know which driver, unfortunately I did not write it down
and the person who was so nice to install it is not here at the moment.

Interestingly the cdrom that did not work with debian worked again with Windows,
but not the scsi cdrom, but we did not have the right drivers, it came with
Macintosh drivers and a search on the web was without luck. But that is actually
unimportant, since I want to run debian anyway.

So does anyone have any idea how to configure this thing? Do I have
a
