Weird states of mind are good, but in a practical vein here's an oldy
but goody:

while ! ncftp ftp.lab.kdd.co.jp; do echo trying ...; sleep 30; done

The echo is important with full screen apps because it's easy to see
it (or not) on the bottom line, while actual connect info tends to get
hidden behind other windows are stuck in random places on the screen.
