This looks like a typo.  The traditional location was
/usr/spool/mail/$LOGNAME, so it's possible somebody mistyped when
updating to /var/spool/mail/$LOGNAME.  All MUAs I've ever seen look
there by default.  I've never seen /var/mail/$LOGNAME.
