How long is "very long"?  :-)

Emacs' ediff tool will highlight individual words within difference regions.
It rather cryptically calls this "refining" and "auto-refining." With proper
customization (or the right keystrokes in the -quick help buffer (check out
! * and @ which you can play with faster than I can describe :-)) you can see
just the changed words. (And the definition of what a "word" is is also
programmable if the content of your lines requires it).
