tlug: LaTeX: CJK package: 0212 support

hello everybody on the tlug mailing list,

lately i've been to the tlug irc channel (othersideofthe.earth.li ,
chanell #tlug) and met Simon; i asked him how to
japanize my tex and he said CJK package from www.ctan.org; wow; i have
installed it and it works! (though some spots have to be cleaned up, but
basically it's ok)

i am so happy to have a japanese TeX; thanx Simon!

i have downloaded JIS X 0212 (supplemental kanji) and am trying to use it
by \CJKchar{JIS2}{<byte1>}{<byte2>} command within the CJK environment

weird enough, with the ordinary JIS X 0208 characters; one has to start
the environment like \begin{CJK}{JIS}{song} (i believe JIS stands for
encoding, 'cos other posibilities are SJIS, or something else for Big5
etc, as i could read in the documentation), but what actually has to
follow, is a japanese text in the __EUC__ (!!!) encoding!! (i was happy
enough to have some examples within the package to find this out); then it
works

then, with the JIS2 (= JIS X 0212) characters, things get really strange;
i have a JIS X 0212 table from the Ken Lunde's UJIP - book;
i thought those numbers to be supplied as arguments to \CJKchar are to be
worked out this way: <byte1> = ku + 32, <byte2> = ten + 32;

but alas, when i try it out and compare to the tables from the Ken Lunde's
book, it seems to me, that <byte1> = ku + 31, <byte2> = ten + 32   are the
correct formulae; but does it give any sense?

to be more concrete: this is an ASCII art (sorry, i'm no ascii artist) of
the character i believe is kuten=4906, but i get it by

\CJKchar[JIS2]{80}{38} -> kuten 4906

(and one of it's meaning is, according to edict, numeral for 10^24, read
"shi")

     %%      %%
   %%%     %%%
%%% %    %% %
    %    %  %
 %%%%%%% %%%%%%%
   %%%     %%
 %% % %   % %
%   %    %  %

then, following is the character i believe is kuten=5006
and i get it by
\CJKchar[JIS2]{81}{38} -> kuten 5006 (note that 81=50+31, 38=06+32)

 %        %
 %%%%%%%  %%%%%%
'   %    '  %

     %    %
  %%%%%%%%%%%%
  %__%____%__%
  %  %    %  %
  %%%%%%%%%%%%

i'd like to be sure in using the JIS2 characters, but this contradictions
don't assure me at all; can anyone give an explanation to this?

thank you,

sincerely

			martin
