By doing `make oldconfig'. If this goes through without asking any new questions, ./.config was generated from ./arch/i386/defconfig. Or maybe there was no ./.config, I'm not sure what make does then. But you should either get a fresh config (lots of questions) or an error from make. >> You can also check this quickly with "egrep 'SCSI_(PPA|IMM)' >> /usr/src/linux/.config". Either you never had a config (in which case you shouldn't be able to start a make) or you did `make mrproper' or something which will delete .config. Probably not, since your problem is not from a kernel with the facility "almost" working, it's a nonexistent facility. Probably. But even with RedHat et al building your own is probably a good idea, getting all the SCSI drivers and cruft out of there (although recent Red Hat et al have started using modules for even SCSI drivers IIRC, which speeds things up considerably once you have a good install). And there are some things that are often modules that you might want to put back _in_, like your Ethernet driver and the SCSI subsystem if you use it.[1] Footnotes: [1] Eg, I ran out of space in / the other day and deleted an obsolete /lib/modules/2.2.11 hierarchy, except that oops, the 2.2.13 kernel wasn't working and I was actually running 2.2.11 after all. I had sources and stuff---for 2.2.13---but I didn't have the MSDOS file system to install a new kernel on the floppy (for hysterical reasons, my root is not on the first hard drive) or an ethernet driver for that kernel so that I could install a generic kernel from the distro. Fun, fun, fun (I figured out a way to get around the problems, point of honor, you know), but a big waste of time; if I'd had those drivers in the kernel life woulda been a lot easier. -- University of Tsukuba Tennodai 1-1-1 Tsukuba 305-8573 JAPAN Institute of Policy and Planning Sciences Tel/fax: +81 (298) 53-5091 _________________ _________________ _________________ _________________ What are those straight lines for?
