The Gimp method worked just fine. 
Lucky the text only filled one xterm window. If it were  
longer, I guess I would have to try this: 

> first convert the text to postscript.
>  ghostscript:  ps to ppm or pgm ( depending on color or grayscale) ** 

or this:
