This was one of the possiblities mooted on the sparclinux mailing list in
the beginning of '97.  There were a couple of changes in the kernels following
the 9609xx version that people were claiming didn't slow down on their
susceptable machines... both in the memory management and in the SCSI
handling (and its need to allocate memory on queues of commands).  I didn't
have the problem, so I never bothered to pursue it.  :-)
