As to the being "hosed" on a Mac...I have three Macs in the house, and
have worked with them for years prior to moving over to Linux.  I have
never had a situation where the MacOS didn't recognize a new device
connected, as long as you were using the proper driver.  The plug-n-pray
that M$ uses is still coming along.  The OSR2 release was getting pretty
good, but still not as good as the Mac Classic I purchased back in 1990,
when PnP was just a dream in M$'s minds.
