You can also add the same command line to your ~/.xinitrc file, and the
background will be loaded when you start and Xwindow session.  The line
I'm talking about is  xv -root -quit /"location of the graphic to use". 
You can also try out xloadimage which does the same.  I've never used it
but many do.  Hope this helps.
