Might want to wait for the Samsung i7500.

I'm going to buy it online and try it on Emobile.  It's technically capable so it's just a matter of whether Emobile locks their SIM (does anyone know?).
If it doesn't work with Emobile SIMs I'll use it on Softbank whose SIMs work fine on unlocked hardware.  Unfortunately it looks like it will be around $700 without subsidization.

At least the newer Android version 1.5 that is now shipped on phones
in germany doesnt any longer require a google mail account for
decent usage.

I guess they were just developing heavily and using the inhouse
infrastructure was simply the fastest way to deliver Android in a 
usable way.

The Openmoko project planned to introduce a new Freerunner hardware
this year, apparently this has been delayed now without new schedule
'because of the financial crisis'.
