Hence the structure of my first post in which I separated out economic from strategic issues. Perhaps I wasn't clear enough ... but I'd intended to cover it in toto in the final paragraph of that message ...

My original post was in response to Stephens,

It appears I missed the fact that you were both talking about 30 years ago not the present? Things have clearly changed a lot since.
