It's usually best to work your modifications into a modified overlay
ebuild (its really no more difficult) then you won't need to remember
how you did it when a dependency changes requiring a recompile.  I do
this a lot for bug fixes, or enhancements that haven't made it into
portage yet.  It also allows you to sandbox the compile.
