Assuming that you repackaged first... *sigh* It's probably more
accurate to say that you didn't, in which case emerge doesn't catch
anything and just unzips a fresh original over your changes... 

ebuild /usr/portage/<class>/<package>/<package-1.2.3>.ebuild compile install qmerge 

is a much better idea after all. Sorry for the detour...
