fsck is a better idea, as it will invoke the proper XXfsck tool, depending on
the filesystem type, as listed in /etc/fstab.

'man fsck' will tell you all that you need to know, but here is a synopsis:

fsck -A

If all you your filesystems are e2fs (as Jim is assuming, and probably quite
correctly), add a '-a' to the above command, as autorepair is safe on an e2fs
partition.
