Yes, and there were a couple of other lines, including "PEERDNS=no",
which I think is/was the culprit.

Before editing this my hand, I followed Anthony Stace's recommendation
and ran /usr/sbin/netconfig, selecting dhcp. That reset ifcfg-eth0 back
to just the three lines above.

On rebooting, dhcp (the protocol, pump is the program) was working again.

Many thanks to everyone who responded.

A related question - is there any way I can impose a local hostname,
which doesn't get in the way of things? Older distros had a
"/etc/HOSTNAME" file, but RH7.2 doesn't seem to have one.
