You might want to have a look at jikes, IBM's standalone Java
compiler:
http://oss.software.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/jikes/

Jikes is written in C++, whereas the javac in the JDK is written
in Java. Jikes used to be about ten times faster than javac,
but with the better JIT stuff now I am not so sure. In any
case, it blazes, and gives better error messages to boot.
