tlug: Netscape hangs

My Netscape hangs for a couple of minutes
now and then. Especially when I get carried
away and opens several windows in my search
for something on the net. 
I access the web thru a socks proxy and I 
have had the same problem since RH 4.2 and
up to the latest S.u.S.E. and with all
Netscape versions I have tried including 4.7.
When Netscape hangs "netstat -t" typically
shows one or more conections in CLOSE_WAIT
state and the hangup does not resolve until
all those connections disapper.

This is gettin to me now (after more than a
year, so I am not easily upset) but I have
no clue what I can do about it. Could it be
the proxy socks software?

Is there a way to manualy "delete" the 
connections that I suspect hangs the 
communication?
