This is very likely Demon's fault.  Since they expect to deal with
dumb Windows machines, they skimped on their terminals, which don't
understand compression.  Offhand, I don't recall the theory why this
slows things down so much.

Turn off all compression options in PPP's options file (often located
in /etc/ppp/options).

Sorry I can't be more specific; a search of the TLUG archive should
turn up more information, as this is a FAQ.  Also try the networking
and (if it exists) PPP HOWTOs.  I'd look, but I gotta get on a bus soon.
