I'm wondering if anyone on the list has had the following problem--I put in Mandrake 6.1 which is basically RedHat 6.0 and couldn't get the mouse to work at all in X. So, chasing around the web, found and tried various solutions, none of which seemed to work that well. Then, powered off, powered back on and voila, the mouse worked fine. Going to XF86Config to see what had happened, I found that under pointer Protocol had changed to "Auto" which was about the only one I hadn't tried, and Device had changed to /dev/ttyS0 which I had tried. I was trying various solutions, and usually, rather than rebooting, just restarting X. I suspect it might have been one from a minihowto of holding down the left mouse button as the computer powered on. If not that, then using mouseconfig --kickstart --device ttyS0 (RH's site had suggested device cua0 but that hadn't worked so I tried the other) My question, elementary as it is--has anyone experienced this and could it simply be fixed from the start by going into XF86Config and changing the protocol and device to auto and /dev/ttyS0. (this was by the way, an MS 2.1A mouse, which, in the course of my searching, I learned does have some problems with various distributions.
