TLUG Akihabara Tour =================== Date: October 23 (Saturday) Time: 13:00 Place: meet at the computer books section of Shosen bookstore (Book Tower 2F) http://watch.impress.co.jp/akiba/map/b_4.html TLUG member Kinichi Kitano will guide us through the alleys and back streets of Akihabara, showing the best places to find (cheap) Linux-compatible parts. Just to give an example of what he was able to find in the past: 1. cheap (returned from expired leases) PCs (Pentium 90, 32MB RAM, 800MB HD, for approximately 10,000 yen) 2. used monitors (17" for less than 10,000 yen) 3. 4x and 6x used CD-ROM drives (for less than 2,000 yen) 4. ISA-bus NICs (for less than 500 yen) 5. XFree86-supported graphics cards 6. OSS and/or ALSA supported sound cards 7. "junk" parts (mouse, keyboards) warning: we will visit shops that deals with used (aka "junk") parts; they usually do not offer warranties of any kind, and with a few expections, the general rule is no returns (however, if the problem is evident, it might be possible to negotiate, but if asked in which OS the part was tested, the recommendation is to answer "Japanese Windows 98" :) Everybody is welcome to come. If you prefer to join us at a later time, just give me a call (PHS 070-5644-3680) to find out where we are.
