tlug: [ANNOUNCEMENT] 10/9 TLUG Technical Meeting

T L U G - Tokyo Linux Users Group
**********************************

Meeting information:

   Date: October 9 (Saturday)

   Time: 13:00

   Place: Temple University Japan
          2-8-12 Minami Azabu, Minato-ku, Tokyo
          (map at http://www.tuj.ac.jp/maps/)

   Topics: 1) "Japanese TrueType Fonts"
                          by Adrian Havill (TurboLinux)

           2) "Linux Internationalization Initiative (Li18nux)
                          by Akio Kido (IBM, LI18NUX)

All Linux users and supporters of open source code and free software
are invited to attend this Tokyo Linux Users Group (TLUG) meeting.
Membership is open to anyone. There are no membership dues or entrance
fees (we will accept donations to help cover the room usage costs).

For this meeting we have invited two highly qualified speakers to talk
about two extremely hot topics. First, Adrian Havill will deliver a
presentation oriented to programmers and developers focusing on the
technical benefits and features of TrueType, especially for Japanese.
Adrian is a senior software engineer at TurboLinux Japan. He primarily
focuses in I18N (and does L10N when I18N is not feasible), integrating
libraries and components to make the GNU/Linux system internationalized.

TrueType fonts (TTF) are scalable, so they look good in large sizes
(i.e. without that "jagged" look peculiar to bitmapped fonts), and they
are well hinted, so they are readable at small sizes. In this meeting,
Adrian will give a detailed explanation of the font development process
and hinting, explaining the differences between earlier implementations
and competing outline font technologies. Programmers will be interested
in his discussion of the low-level FreeType API, X TTF servers, and
development tool recommendations (Visual TT, FontLab). He will also
include a brief discussion of enhancements (especially i18n-related)
in OpenType and legal (copyright, patent) issues.

The second topic of this meeting will be the Linux Internationalization
Initiative (Li18nux). This initiative aims the promotion of a common and
fully internationalized application platform among Linux distributions.
Developers, distributors, manufacturers, and the open source community
worldwide has committed their support to fulfill Li18nux objectives.

Akio Kido, Li18nux co-chair and manager of Application Software Projects
with the DBCS Technical Coordination Office of IBM Japan, is an expert
in i18n. He has a respectable background, particularly in Unix systems,
and is a member of the ISO and W3C-i18n committees. In this meeting,
Kido-san will repeat the presentation he has just delivered at the
LinuxWorld Expo Tokyo '99, explaining the motivations for the establishment
of Li18nux, its objectives, organization and activities. He will show
the current Linux i18n/l10n scenario, pointing out what is wrong with it
and how Li18nux proposes to achieve a better internationalized Linux.

*** TLUG is also a member of the Li18nux initiative, and anyone ***
*** who is interested in i18n should attend this meeting. ***

*** Given the importance of the topic, we will try to conduct ***
*** this meeting in both Japanese and English ***

About TLUG
----------
TLUG is a non-profit, non-political organization established in June
of 1994 to exchange information on the use of Linux and Free Software
Foundation tools. TLUG has an active mailing list, home page, and
regular physical meetings. Discussions are primarily held in English,
but non-English speakers are encouraged to come and participate.
We especially want to encourage Japanese people to attend and will make
efforts to support a bilingual meeting.

TLUG hosts technical meetings every other month on the 2nd Saturday, and
nomikai's on the 3rd Friday of months in between.

The TLUG home page is available at http://tlug.gr.or.jp

Meeting Place
-------------
(map at http://www.tuj.ac.jp/maps/)

The Temple University Japan (TUJ) Campus is located at 'San no Hashi'
(the street name is 'Sakurada Dori'). The DHC building across the street
has a HUGE four sided sign that says DHC. The 06 bus from Shibuya stops
at Furukawa-bashi, which is a one block walk away from TUJ. TUJ is in a
single big building with a sign out front, right on Sakurada Dori.

Cab drivers will take you right there if you ask for San no Hashi. It is a
15 minute walk from Tamachi, but while it is pretty straight forward, it
needs a map, as there are a couple of jogs in the route.

The 96 bus also stops there, and I think the 92 bus as well. It is a 20
minute walk from Hiro (Just go to Tengen-ji Bashi intersection and head
toward Azabu Ju-ban on Meijidori), or a minimum price cab ride from either
Hiro or Tamachi

Once in the university building, look for the signs indicating the room
number where the TLUG meeting will take place.

If you are coming to the meeting, join the mailing list by sending e-mail
to majordomo@example.com including
  subscribe tlug
  end
in the body of the message. You can get a feeling for what the group is
like by looking at the mail on the mailing list.

For any instructions or info before the meeting:
    Jonathan Byrne ............... 070-5517-9250 (PHS)
    Alberto Tomita ............... 070-5644-3680 (PHS)

We look forward to seeing you there!
