Thanks for your help by private e-mail on this one.  A red herring,
though, I'm afraid.

I have FINALLY solved my networking problem with 2.2.x, and got it working.

My setup? No.

Linux? No.

Modem? No, I've tried different ones by different manufacturers.

ISP? Yes, and unfortunatley the last link in the chain I began to
suspect.  I'm 95% certain it's GOL's problem.  I'm mailing Jonathan
privately.
