My only match on this in /usr/lib was:

libgdk.a:gdk.o:         U XSetLocaleModifiers

I got it on a bunch of them in /usr/X11R6/lib:

My libc version is libc-5.4.38-3TL and my glibc version is
glibc-2.0.7-20TL.  

Is the libgdk one the one that's causing this problem?  And having
(maybe) found it, what can I now do to get my GTK to compile?

BTW, thanks for telling me about nm.  I didn't know about that one
before.
