tlug: Installing gcc?

Can a normal user install gcc, e.g. into his own user directories? Or do
you need to be root?

P.S. This is for a Sun OS 5.6 machine. If someone has one and would be
willing to let me telnet to their machine and compile something (and get
paid!), please contact me privately.
