tlug: Mutt-J question

For some messages, I find that Mutt displays text as JIS-style mojibake
(with escape characters and enclosed Japanese "text" printed on screen
unconverted).  But when I hit "h" to show full headers, the text displays
as proper Japanese text.

Does anyone know why this happens?
