I believe it is cheaper for the initial hardware, and you can also write as many times as you want. Ie. it works just like a (slow) hard disk. I've yet to try setting it up under Linux however. One advantage of CD's is you can send large data files to people, as everyone has a CD-ROM player, while few people have MO players (especially outside Japan).
