Unless you have a really slow modem (19200 or less), the port speed
could be a problem (maybe or maybe not related to the one you're
experiencing, but . . . ).  38400 isn't enough to keep with a fast
modem.  If the serial ports on the classic will go faster than that, set
the port speed to 57600 or 115200 and see if that helps.
