I had a quick look for the utility SHOWFAT.EXE and found some references to it - some went as far back as 1993 and talked about 8086's ! - but couldn't find the utility itself. I'll have another look when I get home. > >Rex Walters writes: > > > I don't do windows, but I suspect your problem is with virtual memory. > > Under the control panel somewhere (advanced sumpinerother) you can tell > > it to not allocate any disk space for VM. This reminds me of something. Sounds like you're a little >pressed for disk space, so you might want to set up a common swap >partition so that you don't have to allocate space for a swap file in >you Windoze area. There's a HOWTO on doing that { >http://sunsite.unc.edu/LDP/ >} ... slightly tricky, but it worked quite well for me. I actually had disabled the virtual memory before running the Windows defragmenter and it certainly made a difference but there are still a few "unmovable objects" kicking around and it only takes one to mess everything up. Setting up a common swap file sounds like a good idea - I'll have a look at the link tonight. I am a little pressed for disk space. Getting Linux installed onto the Laptop is more of a learning project than anything else. The next stage is to get my company's internet server running under Apache rather than NT4. I won't be using the laptop for that but thinking about it perhaps I should. Once I have done that....who knows what I'll think of doing next. Thanks for your help anyway.
