As suggested by people here, I have abandonded Dpop, and i'm now trying to get qpopper to work on my system. I followed the instructions in the INSTALL file which came with the download as meticulously as i could. As per the instructions, i've added this line to my /etc/services file pop3 110/tcp # Post Office ...and that was simple enough. Also, it said i should add this line to my /etc/inetd.conf file: pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/lib/popper popper -s My inetd.conf file was a little more confusing looking, though, so the section relevant to mail looks like this: # # Pop and imap mail services et al # pop-2 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop2d #pop-3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd ipop3d #The qpopper install file said this line should go into my /etc/inetd.conf file. pop3 stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/lib/popper popper -s imap stream tcp nowait root /usr/sbin/tcpd imapd Notice that i commented out the previous reference to pop-3, even though it said largely the same thing. I'm not sure if i should be doing that, so tell me if it's wrong. Anyways, the INSTALL file then said: Restart inetd with a kill -HUP inetdpid (some systems can use inetd -c). The following happened: # kill -HUP inetdpid kill: No such pid inetdpid That makes sense to me, because i think when i removed dpop, i basically killed anything to do with pop servers anywhere on my machine. When try to telnet to port 110 (where people tell me the POP server listens) i get this: #telnet localhost 110 Trying 127.0.0.1... telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused What i'm stuck on is that if "kill -HUP inetdpid" restarts the service, what do i type if it's not already running? There isn't anything on that in the INSTALL file. As ever, i would greatly appreciate the help anyone could offer in this. ________________________________ Dave Gutteridge 3D Computer Animation Specialist e-mail: dave@example.com http://www.d-rave.com ________________________________ ---------------------------------------------------------------- Next Nomikai: 20 November, 19:30 Tengu TokyoEkiMae 03-3275-3691 Next Technical Meeting: 12 December, 12:30 HSBC Securities Office ---------------------------------------------------------------- more info: http://tlug.linux.or.jp Sponsors: PHT, HSBC Securities
