As a guy who's always gone for the simple, give me a login prompt to
type in my user ID and password, and then start pppd for me (or even
make me type it), these authentication / login protocols are completely
weird to me.  So, I'm curious:

what are their advantages?  Are they more secure?  Why?
Don't they give a text prompt to log in?
If not, how is login and negotiation handled?

If the answers are good enough, I might even check if my ISP supports
them.
